Le minoxidil topique 2 % et sa version à 3 % ont été comparés dans un seul essai de fiabilité limitée, chez 153 hommes atteints d'alopécie androgénétique du vertex (Katz 1987). À 17 semaines, le 2 % fait gagner plus de cheveux épais sur la zone test de 5,1 cm² (+104 contre +74). Après 1 an, les résultats se rejoignent (+213 contre +202), sans que l'écart soit testé.
