Un essai de fiabilité limitée a comparé, chez 127 hommes déjà traités par minoxidil depuis 2 ans, le minoxidil topique 3 % à la même lotion appliquée une seule fois par jour (Olsen 1987). Au bout de 143 semaines, les cheveux épais gagnés sur une zone test de 5,1 cm² atteignent +335 sous minoxidil topique 3 % contre +235 avec une seule application quotidienne, sans que l'écart soit testé.
